Sewage Floods Tambaram Storm Drain, Posing Health Hazard
20 Jun
Summary
- Stormwater drain in Judge Colony now carries sewage, causing foul odors.
- Concerns rise over public health and groundwater contamination risks.
- Authorities ordered drain desilting and identification of discharge points.

A stormwater drain in Tambaram's Judge Colony has become a channel for sewage, raising significant public health and environmental concerns. Residents allege that a nearby state-run working women's hostel is discharging excess sewage into the drain, causing stagnant water, foul odors, and potential groundwater contamination. The issue is exacerbated by a technical fault in a railway culvert, impeding natural water flow.
This contamination has reportedly led to discolored groundwater from borewells, forcing many families to purchase drinking water. The lack of a comprehensive underground drainage network in parts of Tambaram Sanatorium and surrounding areas amplifies the problem. Residents have also reported defunct CCTV cameras along the affected stretch, raising security concerns.
Tambaram Corporation Commissioner S. Balachandran confirmed receipt of complaints and stated that immediate measures, including drain desilting and identifying discharge points, have been ordered. Residents are seeking swift action to prevent further environmental degradation.
