A popular Sydney waterfront venue, The Boathouse at Shelly Beach in Manly, has had its bid to relax liquor restrictions denied by the NSW Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority. The venue applied for a primary service authorisation to permit alcohol sales without requiring patrons to order a full meal.
This proposal generated substantial opposition, with 114 formal objections submitted to the authority. Residents and environmental advocates voiced concerns regarding potential increases in antisocial behaviour, noise disturbances impacting nearby homes, and adverse effects on native birdlife. The National Parks Association also formally objected due to potential environmental impacts.
In its decision, the authority cited the significant number of objections and concluded that the proposal risked causing detriment to the local community. The regulator also noted higher-than-average alcohol-related assaults in the Manly area as a contributing factor.
The Boathouse Group expressed disappointment, stating their intention was not to create a late-night drinking destination but to offer flexibility at a quality venue. They are now considering a review of the decision.
