Remains discovered on a Swiss glacier have been identified as two Belgian men who vanished over three decades ago. A hiker found the remains on the Trift Glacier on July 26th, exposed by melting ice.
Forensic analysis, including DNA testing, confirmed the identities of the two men, who were 39 and 41 years old when they disappeared in 1992 in the Weissmies region. Valais police maintain missing-person records dating back to 1925.
As glaciers retreat due to increasing global temperatures, bodies and artifacts from decades past are emerging. This phenomenon has been observed in other Swiss glacier discoveries in recent years, including a body identified as a missing German climber near the Matterhorn in 2023.
