Swifts Vanish: Warmer UK Summers Bring New Dangers

Migratory swifts are returning to the UK in greater numbers, drawn by warmer summer conditions. However, this same warmth is proving deadly. Recent heatwaves have caused fatal temperatures in swift nesting sites, leading to chicks abandoning nests before they are able to fly. This phenomenon has also been observed across France and Germany, overwhelming rescue centers.

These unique birds undertake an arduous journey, flying non-stop from regions like the Congo Basin to nest in British eaves. Swifts spend most of their lives airborne, even sleeping and mating on the wing. Their populations have been declining for decades, exacerbated by the loss of traditional nesting gaps in buildings.

Conservation efforts are underway, including a campaign to make swift bricks—artificial nesting bricks—a mandatory feature in new homes. Scotland has already enacted this into law, while England is still reviewing public responses. The long-term impact of these environmental shifts on the swift population remains a concern.
