Swedes Embrace Silence: Couples Unplug in Tranquil Forest Cabin
14 Nov
Summary
- Couples spent 4 days whispering in a Swedish forest cabin
- Campaign promotes Sweden's tranquility as a tourist draw
- Noise pollution is a major health concern in Europe

As of November 14th, 2025, a unique campaign in Sweden has been drawing attention to the issue of noise pollution and the country's serene natural landscapes. Three couples recently spent four days in a cozy forest cabin in southern Sweden, where they were required to keep their conversations below 45 decibels, roughly the level of a normal conversation.
The "Silent Cabin" project, organized by Visit Skane, a tourism promotion agency, aimed to showcase Sweden's appeal as a destination for those seeking relaxation and tranquility. According to the organizers, many tourists are drawn to Sweden for its calm and natural experiences. However, noise pollution remains a significant problem in Europe, with one in five people exposed to harmful levels.
The couples, all city dwellers, embraced the challenge of whispering and gesturing to communicate during their stay. They spent their time taking walks, meditating, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings, with a sound meter ensuring they adhered to the strict noise guidelines. Participants reported feeling rejuvenated and energized by the experience, with one describing herself as a "new person" after the retreat.
While such individual solutions can provide temporary respite, experts caution that addressing noise pollution requires broader, collective measures, such as lower speed limits, engine noise restrictions, and promoting active transportation. Nevertheless, the "Silent Cabin" project has highlighted the growing demand for quiet, nature-based experiences and the importance of preserving Sweden's tranquil landscapes for both residents and visitors alike.
