The Yusuf Meherally Centre in Panvel, 100 km from a proposed AI data center, champions sustainable rural development through its 'Festival of Alternatives' (October 2-4). This event highlights indigenous practices and a Gandhian approach to living, prioritizing people and the planet over profit.
Farmers, conservationists, and activists will discuss renewable energy, food systems, and climate action. The festival also features immersive experiences like permaculture and papermaking, alongside star-gazing. A replica of Gandhi's simple home, built with natural materials, is a key attraction.
Founded in 1961 by Dr. G G Parikh, the Centre promotes sustainable living and communal harmony. It has evolved to include a Shantiniketan-style school, a girls' hostel, a healthcare center, and a skill development facility, offering vocational training.
The campus also hosts cottage industries for soap-making, dairy, and pottery. The Centre's volunteers extend their work in healthcare, education, and skill development to empower marginalized communities across India.
The festival commemorates the first death anniversary of its founder, Dr. G G Parikh, who passed away at 101 on October 2, his mentor's birthday.
