Surrey Faces Mediterranean Wildfire Risk
27 Apr
Summary
- Surrey faces Mediterranean-like wildfire risks.
- Wildfires damaged over 1,000 hectares in 2022.
- Human activity is the main cause of wildfires.

Surrey is at risk of experiencing severe wildfires, comparable to those seen in the Mediterranean and Los Angeles, according to a wildlife trust director. James Herd warns that a combination of factors could lead to a 'perfect storm' scenario, where fire services might struggle to contain multiple large fires occurring concurrently. This heightened risk is exacerbated by increasing temperatures and dry weather spells.
Wildfires have already affected Surrey this year, with significant damage reported in 2022, when over 1,000 hectares of trust-managed land were impacted. Research from Nasa indicates that extreme wildfire activity has more than doubled over two decades, with human activities identified as the primary cause. The Met Office's Fire Severity Index currently categorizes parts of Surrey as being at 'very high' risk.
Preventative measures suggested by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service include avoiding barbecues and open fires, properly disposing of smoking materials, and taking litter home, as discarded glass can magnify sunlight and spark fires. These recommendations aim to mitigate the growing threat of wildfires in the region.
