Surat Ganesh Idols: Massive Immersion Event Concludes

Summary

  • Over 71,000 Ganesh idols were immersed during the two-day event.
  • More than 10,000 large idols were immersed at designated sea points.
  • A growing trend towards eco-friendly celebrations was observed.

The city of Surat celebrated a grand Ganesh visarjan, with "Ganpati Bappa Morya" chants filling the air as devotees brought their idols for immersion. The two-day exercise saw a total of 71,938 Ganesh idols immersed.

Significantly, 10,546 large idols, measuring over nine feet, were immersed at three designated sea immersion points: Hazira, Dumas, and Magdalla. Immersion at Hazira continued through Saturday night due to the large influx of huge idols.

In addition, 61,392 smaller idols were immersed in 21 artificial ponds managed by the Surat Municipal Corporation across the city. These ponds concluded immersion operations by approximately 2 AM, followed by dewatering and water recycling.

Anil Biscuitwala, president of the Surat Shaher Ganesh Utsav Samiti, noted that around 9,000 idols were immersed at their original installation sites. This trend indicates a growing citizen preference for more environmentally conscious celebrations and a consideration for reducing the size of idols.

The Samiti is also raising awareness about redirecting funds from large idol expenses towards welfare activities. Furthermore, the Surat Municipal Corporation facilitated the collection of decorative materials from idols, which NGOs' women members are recycling for reuse.
