An M42 "Duster" anti-aircraft gun, retired from the Royal Jordanian Army, now serves as a popular artificial reef in Aqaba, Jordan. It was intentionally sunk in September 1999 to promote marine life and offer a unique diving attraction. The vehicle, nicknamed "The Tank," is located approximately 80 meters from the shore in shallow waters, making it accessible for beginners.
Over the years, the sunken tank has become a haven for diverse marine life. Soft corals and sponges adorn its hull, and schools of colorful reef fish, lionfish, damselfish, and blennies inhabit its nooks and crannies. This underwater site is noted for its low currents and excellent visibility, appealing to both divers and snorkelers.
Aqaba has a history of creating artificial reefs, including a C-130 Hercules plane and a passenger jet sunk in recent years. These initiatives aim to support natural reefs by offering alternative exploration sites. Research suggests that artificial reefs can enhance certain marine populations, though they differ from natural reef ecosystems.
