Concrete Encroaches on Bird Haven: Sultanpur Under Threat
4 Jul
Summary
- 183 eco-sensitive zone violations recorded around Sultanpur National Park.
- Construction includes farmhouses, banquet halls, and commercial buildings.
- Forest department to issue notices for the first time to violators.
Sultanpur National Park's vital eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) is under increasing pressure, with 183 recorded violations, up from 48 since the last inspection.
These violations include farmhouses, banquet halls, and commercial buildings encroaching upon the protected area. The ESZ regulations restrict construction within specific distances to safeguard the park's ecosystem and its status as an internationally recognised wetland.
Despite previous notices issued by the department of town and country planning, enforcement has been weak. This time, the forest department will issue its own notices, with a joint inspection planned for Monday.
Conservationists stress that immediate and effective enforcement is crucial. Unchecked development poses a significant threat to Sultanpur, a key stopover for migratory birds on the Central Asian Flyway.
