Celebrity Village Faces Cable Conflict
2 Jul
Summary
- New consultation on underground electricity cables in Walberswick.
- LionLink project aims to connect UK and Netherlands grids.
- Villagers raise concerns over cable proximity to housing.

A village celebrated for its celebrity residents is engaging in a renewed consultation regarding plans for underground electricity cables. The National Grid's LionLink project intends to link the UK and Netherlands' electricity grids, alongside an offshore windfarm, potentially supplying power to 2.5 million UK homes.
Concerns persist among residents of Walberswick, Suffolk, about the chosen landfall location for these cables. Earlier this year, a consultation received approximately 900 feedback submissions. The current, more targeted consultation, running from July 7 to August 5, will examine specific proposed changes.
Campaigners express continued apprehension, noting that proposed shifts in the cable emergence point are minimal and still too close to housing. They argue this third attempt to establish a landfall site in Walberswick highlights its unsuitability, advocating for brownfield locations instead.
National Grid Ventures has indicated a commitment to refining plans based on local input. They are also considering reduced construction hours, potentially eliminating routine Sunday and bank holiday work, aiming to balance energy infrastructure needs with community and environmental considerations.
