Students at St Aloysius Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Mangaluru have creatively repurposed approximately 1,200 old saris into reusable cloth bags. This initiative actively promotes alternatives to single-use plastic, embodying the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle.
On Gandhi Jayanti, which occurred last Thursday relative to October 2, 2026, the institute, in collaboration with local organizations, distributed 1,000 of these handmade bags. The event aimed to raise public awareness about environmental responsibility and conscious consumption.
The project was integrated into the institute's sewing technology trade, enabling students to apply their skills to a significant environmental cause. An accompanying awareness procession further spread messages of cleanliness and responsible citizenship.
