£300,000 Funding to Tackle Stoke's Flood Woes
27 Mar
Summary
- Extra £300,000 funding will help Stoke prepare for major flood events.
- 44,000 gullies city-wide require maintenance with limited crews.
- Council is doubling gully tankers and hiring a flood officer.

Stoke-on-Trent council bosses have announced an extra £300,000 in funding to bolster the city's defenses against major flooding events. Officials cited climate change as a factor that could lead to a repeat of the intense rainfall experienced last autumn.
On October 31 of last year, 52 flooding incidents were recorded across the city within an eight-hour period. While many were due to blocked drains, the council is investing in gully cleaning and has hired a flood officer.
The authority plans to clear gullies at least once every two years, a significant improvement on previous efforts, though still acknowledged as not entirely sufficient. This increased spending is part of the council's budget for 2026/27.
