14 Mar
Summary
- Former dairy farm to be transformed into a peatland research center.
- Project aims to find solutions for climate change and water quality.
- Site is on Somerset Levels, holding rare deep lowland peat.

A former dairy farm on the Somerset Levels and Moors is being redeveloped into a significant research center focused on restoring lowland peat bogs. Somerset Wildlife Trust has submitted plans to convert buildings at Honeygar Farm, aiming to create an internationally recognized hub for research, innovation, and collaboration.
This initiative will focus on the rare deep lowland peat found at the site, which is crucial for understanding and mitigating climate change impacts and enhancing water quality. Peatlands, though covering a small portion of the Earth's land, store more carbon than all forests combined. This project offers a unique opportunity to gather evidence on managing lowland peatlands for wildlife, sustainable land use, and local economies.
The plans also incorporate public amenities, including a circular walk, viewing areas, and public toilets, with restoration of an existing orchard. The local planning authority will now consider the application as part of the statutory planning process, potentially paving the way for significant advancements in peatland science and conservation.
