Somaliland's Drought: Israel Offers Water Hope
23 Feb
Summary
- Somaliland faces severe drought with no rain since mid-2025.
- Israel, a water management leader, will assist Somaliland.
- Farming relies on rainfall, impacting food security and livelihoods.

Somaliland is enduring a severe drought, with locals reporting no rainfall since June or July of 2025. Faysal Omar Salah's family farm is parched, and his children rely on cattle milk for survival as schools are closed. The Lallays reservoir is dry, impacting livestock and traditional farming practices.
In response, Somaliland is seeking assistance from Israel, recognized for its advanced water management techniques. Israel, which recycles wastewater and uses desalination, has invited Somaliland water sector workers for training. Israeli experts are expected to visit and help implement new technologies to increase the cultivation rate from its current low of 3%.
The drought exacerbates existing food insecurity, with an estimated 4.4 million people in Somalia and Somaliland facing severe challenges. Despite the harsh conditions, some farmers, like Muhummad Mohamad Ismail, are adapting by implementing water-saving techniques and investing in water reservoirs to sustain their crops.
