Silokhra Pond: Redeveloped but Dying?
27 Jul
Summary
- Newly redeveloped pond shows algae growth within a year.
- Fish introduction and aeration equipment remain missing.
- Pathways are uneven, posing safety risks to visitors.

The Silokhra pond, revitalized at a cost of ₹3 crore, is deteriorating less than a year after its final phase was completed in May. Residents report significant algae growth, stagnant water, and a lack of introduced fish, which are crucial for ecosystem balance. Concerns have also been raised about missing oxygen-generating equipment and poor upkeep of pathways, creating safety risks.
The pond's history involves a National Green Tribunal (NGT) directive in 2024 to redevelop the site as a pond, overturning plans for a commercial complex. Despite NGT orders, key directives like fish introduction and aeration machine installation are yet to be fully complied with, as indicated by a petitioner.
GMDA officials state that fountains are installed and fish will be introduced soon. They also clarified that the pond is designed to be sustained by treated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The maintenance of the pond is reportedly managed under corporate social responsibility (CSR), with GMDA assuring that complaints will be addressed.
