For the first time, photographic evidence confirms the presence of the Eurasian lynx in Sikkim, a significant find in the Eastern Himalayas. This discovery follows a previous record from Arunachal Pradesh last year, suggesting the species has a wider range in the region than previously documented.
The sighting occurred during a long-term monitoring program for snow leopards and associated high-altitude species, jointly led by the Forest and Environment Department of Sikkim and WWF-India. This initiative aims to track population trends and assess the condition of these fragile rangelands.
The Eurasian lynx, characterized by its ear tufts, is well-adapted to cold, high-altitude environments. The Tso Lhamo plateau, where the lynx was found, is a harsh cold desert ecosystem that evidently supports a rich variety of trans-Himalayan wildlife, including snow leopards and Pallas's cats, highlighting its exceptional conservation value.
Conservation efforts are being identified, including wildlife-friendly traffic management and waste systems. Regular health drives for domestic animals are also proposed to protect the ecosystem's biodiversity and ensure the sustainability of these crucial high-altitude habitats.
