Summary
- Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve protects giant pandas and rare plants.
- A conservationist found purpose by observing nature's resilience.
- The reserve boasts a stable giant panda population with ongoing DNA monitoring.

Established in 1978 and designated a national nature reserve in 1986, the Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve in Sichuan province spans 40,000 hectares. It is dedicated to conserving forest plants and rare wildlife, including the giant panda and golden snub-nosed monkey.
Initially finding the remote work challenging, a research division head found her calling after 12 years. The reserve's natural environment, with animals moving freely and plants growing undisturbed, inspired a deep appreciation for conservation.
Tangjiahe is a vital ecological hub for the giant panda national park, characterized by largely undisturbed subtropical mountain forests. This minimal human interference allows for natural regeneration and unusually high wildlife encounter rates.
The reserve's conservation efforts are evident in its stable giant panda population, with numbers consistently monitored. Since 2016, an annual DNA archive has been maintained, confirming over 30 individuals each year.
