Sheffield Boosts Recycling: Bigger Bins Coming Soon!
16 Mar
Summary
- Larger blue bins for paper and cardboard will be rolled out starting summer.
- Brown bins will accept more waste types, including aerosols, from April 2026.
- Over 10,000 residents requested larger bins for paper and cardboard.

Residents in Sheffield are set to receive larger blue recycling bins for their paper and cardboard waste, with the rollout beginning in the summer.
The new 240-litre blue bins will replace the current 140-litre ones, addressing resident feedback that existing bins are too small for their recycling needs.
Furthermore, starting April 1, 2026, the brown recycling bins, currently for glass, tins, and plastic bottles, will be able to accept a broader array of materials. These will include plastic pots, tubs, trays, aerosols, foil, and cartons.
Councillor Joe Otten highlighted the council's commitment to improving services and responding to residents' needs, stating this move is about doing the right thing for the city and the planet. The council aims to deliver all new blue bins by the end of 2026. Unwanted bins will be reused or recycled.
