Summary
- EV charging hub proposed near ancient Smithy Wood in Sheffield.
- Hundreds of objections raised over wildlife and habitat concerns.
- Council planning committee to consider approval on April 7.

Proposals to construct an electric vehicle charging hub on Cowley Way, adjacent to Smithy Wood in Sheffield, have encountered significant opposition. Hundreds of objections have been lodged against the plan, which aims to establish a refuelling and recharging center for HGVs and commercial vehicles.
Concerns highlighted by objectors, including the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and ward councillor, focus on the potential negative impact on Smithy Wood and its sensitive wildlife habitats. Protected species such as great crested newts, various bat species, and reptiles like slow-worms are residents of the area. Additionally, the development is cited as a threat to the habitats of the Red List species, the skylark, and other bird populations.
The application, recommended for approval by planning officers, will be deliberated by Sheffield City Council's planning and highways committee on April 7. Opponents also raise issues regarding adequate existing services, potential instability from past mining, increased HGV traffic on local roads, noise, and light pollution, as well as the impact on the Blackburn Valley Trail. A previous application for an M1 service station on a nearby woodland area was refused.
