Sheffield's Attercliffe Gets Major Walking, Cycling Upgrade
21 Feb
Summary
- Work began this week to upgrade walking, cycling, and public transport.
- The Attercliffe area aims for 3,000 new homes and 1,500 jobs.
- The first phase will take 15 weeks and impacts specific roads.

The first phase of significant infrastructure upgrades has begun in Sheffield's Attercliffe neighbourhood, focusing on enhancing walking, cycling, and public transport routes. This project is a key component of a larger vision to revitalize the Attercliffe area, with aspirations to develop approximately 3,000 new homes and generate around 1,500 jobs over the next 10 to 15 years.
Sheffield City Council has stated that these works aim to improve the general public realm and bolster safety for children traveling to and from local schools. Councillor Ben Miskell emphasized the project's objective: to create "people-friendly, prosperous streets" that offer residents greater flexibility in their travel choices.
The initial phase targets the area between Staniforth Road/Attercliffe Road and Worksop Road. This involves temporary closure of the northbound carriageway, with southbound traffic rerouted via Newhall Road and Brightside Lane. The southbound carriageway will operate as a single northbound lane during this period.
This initial stage is scheduled to last for 15 weeks, with construction activities occurring between 7:30 AM and 5:00 PM GMT, Monday to Friday, to minimize disruption. Planned improvements include new road crossings, dedicated cycle routes connecting Darnall and Attercliffe to the city centre, and a more attractive Attercliffe High Street with new planting.
Further enhancements include better bus priority routes to shorten journey times and the introduction of the city's first red route, prohibiting vehicle parking and waiting. Oasis Community Learning's regional director, Rachael MacLeod, noted that the project will help ensure children's safe school commutes and create a more appealing environment for residents and workers.
