Tragedy Strikes Shedd Aquarium: Two More Belugas Die

Tragically, two more beluga whales have died at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, casting a shadow over a recent international rescue operation. The two whales, Rain and Beethoven, perished despite intensive care from veterinary and animal care teams. Rain, a 20-year-old female, had arrived at the Shedd in mid-August as part of the rescue. Beethoven, a 34-year-old male, was a resident of the aquarium's existing pod.
These recent deaths follow the passing of another beluga whale last week, which had also been part of the rescue. The Shedd Aquarium is involved in re-homing approximately 30 beluga whales that were relocated from a marine park in Canada that had been closed for nearly two years. Other destinations for these rescued whales include Atlanta, San Antonio, San Diego, and locations in Spain.
