The government is expanding its innovative SharkSmart drone program to enhance safety at beaches across the region. This summer, drone surveillance has been successfully implemented at six new coastal locations, including Kirra Beach, Cylinder Beach, Tangalooma, Kings Beach, Kellys Beach, and Agnes Water Main Beach. These locations were chosen to provide broader coverage and proactive shark monitoring.
Since the program's expansion, drone operators have detected a significant number of sharks. A total of 149 sharks have been spotted at these newly monitored beaches, providing valuable data for beachgoers and authorities. This marks a substantial increase in surveillance capabilities.
The SharkSmart initiative highlights a commitment to employing non-lethal, cutting-edge solutions for public safety. Premier David Crisafulli has previously emphasized prioritizing human life while exploring advanced methods to coexist with marine wildlife, showcasing a forward-thinking approach to beach management.
