12 May
Summary
- Open garbage dump near Block D creates foul smell and health concerns.
- Municipal corporation has not yet hired workers for waste collection.
- Residents reported fire incidents causing toxic smoke and pollution.

In Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, an open area in front of Block D has transformed into a significant garbage dump. This situation has led to widespread foul odors and serious health concerns among the local population.
The land, originally intended for a road, became a dumping ground over recent months. While the Ludhiana Improvement Trust handed the area to the municipal corporation in April, waste collection services are still not operational. The civic body has acknowledged that hiring workers for waste collection and lifting is an ongoing process and has not yet been completed.
Residents have expressed dissatisfaction, noting that even private waste collectors are not ensuring scientific disposal. They also allege that garbage is frequently set on fire, releasing toxic smoke that contributes to air pollution and causes respiratory issues for the elderly and eye irritation for children.
Despite a formal request submitted in April by approximately 50 residents to the municipal commissioner, urging immediate site clearance, no solution has been implemented. This highlights a broader issue, with multiple garbage accumulation sites reportedly present in the area, exacerbating pollution and health risks.
