Bengaluru's vibrant summer blooms serve as a reminder of SG Neginhal, a dedicated forest officer and conservationist. Neginhal spent his career advocating for both wildlife and urban green spaces. His father, also a forest officer, instilled in him a deep love for nature.
After serving in Karnataka's forests, Neginhal's focus shifted to wildlife management. In 1972, he played a crucial role in establishing the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, a key initiative under Project Tiger. His dedication to conservation was profound.
In 1981, Neginhal was tasked with reforesting Bengaluru. He implemented a unique strategy, planting six-foot saplings protected by enclosures to combat browsing cattle. Between 1982 and 1987, he personally led the planting of 15 lakh trees, revitalizing the city's landscape.
