The Semeru volcano in Indonesia's East Java province has erupted, according to the Antara news agency. Ash clouds rose approximately 1,000 meters above the volcano's summit, reaching an altitude of 4,676 meters above sea level. The eruption produced significant emissions of thick gray ash, which was observed to be spreading eastward.
Authorities have implemented safety measures, prohibiting tourists and local residents from entering a 5-kilometer radius around the crater. This precaution is in response to the potential danger posed by the ejection of hot rocks. Semeru, standing at 3,676 meters above sea level, is the fourth highest volcano in Indonesia and the tallest peak on Java island.
The Indonesian archipelago, known for its extensive island chain and location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences high seismic activity. With over 500 volcanoes, of which about 130 are active, the region is inherently prone to such geological events.
