- Residents demand scientific waste management amid health concerns.

A significant fire at the Sector 145 dumpsite was successfully doused by Thursday after burning for four days. The blaze, which affected an estimated 750,000 tonnes of waste, required the deployment of 10 fire tenders and 30 personnel.
Dumpsite fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish due to deep-seated smoldering and the release of gases from decomposing waste. These fires generate toxic smoke and present a considerable challenge for firefighting efforts, as explained by local officials.
Concerns have been raised by residents of adjacent areas regarding the dumpsite's perilous condition, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention. They highlighted persistent issues of foul smell, air pollution, and environmental degradation due to continued waste dumping.
The Noida Authority has initiated steps for remediation, engaging an agency to clear the site within a year. Additionally, plans are underway for a bio-CNG plant to manage the city's substantial daily waste generation of 800 to 1,000 tonnes.
