East Devon District Council is advancing plans to secure nearly £2 million in National Lottery funding to elevate Seaton Wetlands and adjacent nature sites. Officers are developing a £1.92 million application for the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with the objective of making Seaton Wetlands a premier nature destination.
The proposed improvements, known as the Wild About Seaton project, are set to feature a new visitor hub, an observational bird hide, and enhanced accessible pathways. These will connect Seaton town centre directly to the surrounding nature reserves, fostering greater public engagement with the natural environment.
This initiative also involves restoring 10 hectares of saltmarsh and creating 12 hectares of freshwater grazing marsh, significantly boosting local biodiversity. Furthermore, the project includes enhancements to Seaton Museum's natural history collection. A partnership involving Seaton Tramway and Seaton Museum is steering these plans, which are expected to benefit tourism and the local economy.
