24 Jun
Summary
- Twelve sea turtles successfully rehabilitated and released.
- Turtles treated for life-threatening conditions at a hospital.
- Release occurred after water temperatures reached a key threshold.
Twelve sea turtles, including Kemp's ridleys, loggerheads, and green sea turtles, have been released into Nantucket Sound after undergoing extensive rehabilitative care. The turtles spent seven months at the New England Aquarium's Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy, where they were treated for life-threatening conditions such as pneumonia, dehydration, and trauma.
These endangered and threatened species were deemed healthy enough for release once the water temperature off West Dennis Beach crossed the 65-degree mark. The New England Aquarium's initiative is crucial for conservation efforts, as these animals face numerous threats including climate change and pollution.
To aid in ongoing conservation strategies, the turtles were tagged for post-release monitoring. This monitoring will track their behavior, habitat utilization, and survivorship, providing valuable data to inform future protection initiatives for sea turtle populations.
