Turtle Rescued From Ghost Fishing Gear Peril

A significant loggerhead sea turtle was recently rescued off the coast of Haifa, Israel, after being found struggling with a fishing line wrapped around it. Lifeguards from the Haifa Municipality's Coastal Department spotted the distressed animal and initiated a rescue effort. They were soon joined by Professor Roee Diamant from the University of Haifa and marine unit inspector Ilya Baskin of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.

The turtle, later named Halil, was transported to the National Sea Turtle Center in Mikhomoret for immediate treatment. While X-rays revealed no broken bones, the turtle's injured limb is in a state of necrosis, necessitating a lengthy recovery and rehabilitation period before any potential release back into the sea.

This incident brings renewed attention to the dangers posed by "ghost gear" – abandoned fishing nets, lines, and hooks. This debris poses a severe and widespread threat to marine life, causing injuries, impeding mobility, and leading to potential fatalities. Professor Diamant emphasized the extensive nature of this problem along the coastline, noting the considerable amount of abandoned fishing gear left behind.
