California Sea Lions Vanish: Summer Migration Underway
17 Jun
Summary
- Male California sea lions journey over 1,000 miles south for breeding.
- Steller sea lions remain year-round on the Oregon Coast.
- Warming oceans may significantly impact sea lion populations.

The departure of male California sea lions from Oregon's North Coast signals the arrival of summer. These marine mammals undertake an annual migration of over 1,000 miles to their breeding grounds off Southern California.
While the California sea lions depart, their larger cousins, Steller sea lions, are a year-round fixture along the Oregon Coast. These Stellers, distinct in their deeper roar and lighter coloring, number between 2,000 to 3,000 in Oregon alone.
The annual migration is crucial for male California sea lions, allowing them access to females during the breeding season. Females, however, remain closer to the breeding colonies in Southern California to care for their pups, as long-distance travel is too taxing for young animals.
Scientists are increasingly concerned about the impact of environmental changes on sea lion populations. Warming ocean temperatures, marine heat waves, and El Niño conditions could disrupt the food web, forcing females to travel further for sustenance. Studies suggest that even a modest increase in sea surface temperatures could significantly reduce population growth or even lead to a decline.
