The mayor of San Diego has publicly condemned the act, calling it unacceptable and emphasizing the need to protect wildlife. Harassing sea lions is prohibited under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act, which imposes penalties of over $30,000 per violation and the possibility of imprisonment. City officials have previously implemented signage and restricted access to areas where sea lions gather to prevent human-wildlife conflicts, especially during pupping season. This case echoes a similar incident in Maui where a visitor faced charges for allegedly harassing an endangered Hawaiian monk seal.
