Scotland Buried: Snow Days Hit Ninth Day
9 Jan
Summary
- Scotland braces for more snow and ice with yellow warnings issued.
- Over 160 schools in Aberdeenshire remain closed due to weather.
- A farmer reported an £8,000 loss due to missed milk collection.

Scotland faces continued disruption as the Met Office issues new yellow warnings for snow and ice across much of the country. This comes as the north and north-east enter their ninth consecutive day of snowfall. Many educational institutions remain closed, with over 160 schools in Aberdeenshire shut, alongside numerous others in Aberdeen and the Highlands, highlighting the widespread impact.
The severe weather has caused significant transport issues. While main roads are largely cleared, people are advised to check travel plans. Snow gates are closed on key routes, and a 10-mile stretch of railway line in the Highlands is shut due to heavy snow. Businesses are also affected, with one dairy farmer reporting an £8,000 loss from a missed milk collection, illustrating the severe strain on supply chains.
First Minister John Swinney visited Aberdeen to thank gritter drivers and emergency services for their efforts. He urged the public to remain vigilant and adjust plans according to Met Office warnings. Meanwhile, emergency services have been active, with mountain rescue teams assisting climbers and railway workers saving a woman and her dogs trapped in deep snow near Insch.
