Scottish Government Approves Battery Storage Near Bird Sanctuary
10 Jul
Summary
- A 200 MW battery energy storage system was approved by Scottish ministers.
- The RSPB objected due to proximity to a protected bird area.
- Ministers cited renewable energy flexibility as a key benefit.

A large battery energy storage scheme near Thurso, Caithness, has received approval from the Scottish government. The Rigifa BESS, a 200 MW system on 45 hectares at Phillips Mains Farm, was granted permission despite objections from bird charity RSPB.
The RSPB voiced concerns that the development site is close to the Caithness Lochs Special Protection Area, a vital wintering ground for geese and swans. They argued that insufficient consideration was given to the cumulative loss of foraging habitat.
Scottish ministers stated that battery energy storage systems are essential infrastructure, enhancing the flexibility and resilience of renewable energy sources like wind and solar farms. They determined that, on balance, the benefits of the project outweighed its potential impacts.
Historic Environment Scotland also consulted on the proposal, noting potential effects on the nearby Castle of Mey. However, they concluded there would be no adverse impact on the listed buildings. The application was submitted by David Bell Planning Ltd on behalf of Field Rigifa Ltd.
