118 paddlers embarked on the 28th annual Schuylkill River Sojourn, a seven-day expedition covering 112 miles. The journey began in Schuylkill Haven and is set to conclude in Philadelphia's Boathouse Row on June 19. While 58 participants will complete the entire voyage, others will join for portions, bringing the total number of paddlers to 275.
This year's sojourn highlights the Schuylkill River's rich history and its role in development, industry, and recreation over 250 years. The "River of Revolutions" was recently designated a national water trail, a unique status for Pennsylvania. Participants, including first-timers and seasoned paddlers like Brian Swisher, will explore the river's evolving landscape and community connections.
The group's first day covered 17.5 miles, with stops in Auburn Dam and an overnight camp in Port Clinton. Future stops include Reading, Birdsboro, Pottstown, Mont Clare, and West Conshohocken, featuring community events themed around the nation's 250th birthday.
