Summary
- 1,950 acres of South Carolina forest are now permanently protected.
- The Nature Conservancy facilitated the land transfer to the US Forest Service.
- The protected land includes valuable hardwoods, wetlands, and streams.
A 1,950-acre forest in South Carolina, previously facing development threats, has been permanently protected as part of the Sumter National Forest. The Nature Conservancy purchased the land in 2023 and has now transferred it to the US Forest Service. This action safeguards upland hardwoods, wetlands, and streams near Joanna in Laurens County, ensuring public access and preserving critical habitat.
The protected acreage is situated in Laurens County, bordering land designated for an equestrian park. This critical habitat supports diverse wildlife, including white-tailed deer and wild turkeys. The Nature Conservancy acted swiftly to acquire the land as development pressures increase along the I-26 corridor, preventing its subdivision and sale to private developers.
This transaction involved The Nature Conservancy's purchase of a larger 2,281-acre tract for $6.47 million in 2023. A 335-acre parcel was later sold to Laurens County for an equestrian park, with the remainder now integrated into Sumter National Forest. This effort builds on prior conservation successes, including a 2,000-acre easement secured in 2025.
The addition expands Sumter National Forest's presence in Laurens County, enhancing its 170,000-acre footprint. The land will be co-managed by the US Forest Service and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, allowing for public hunting, fishing, hiking, and birding. Future plans include improved public access with new trails and parking areas.
National forest status provides long-term protections against future development and brings federal resources for habitat management and maintenance. This conservation effort aligns with South Carolina's Ten Million Acres Initiative, aiming to conserve vast areas of forests and wetlands through strategic partnerships.
