An appeal has been initiated by the National Trust to secure 138 hectares of land adjacent to Dorset's iconic Cerne Abbas Giant. The charity aims to raise £330,000 to purchase this area, dubbed Giant's Lair, which encompasses Giant Hill and its rich biodiversity. Over £2 million has already been committed to the effort.
The acquisition is vital for preserving and enhancing the ecological significance of the site. Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Giant Hill supports numerous butterfly species. The National Trust plans to restore chalk grassland, plant new woodlands, and create varied habitats to aid threatened wildlife and bolster climate change adaptation.
This initiative, supported by notable figures like Sir Stephen Fry, represents a significant opportunity to protect a cherished landscape. The land holds both archaeological importance, dating back thousands of years, and ecological value. The National Trust hopes to complete fundraising by January 2026 to ensure the long-term care and preservation of this unique heritage site and its wildlife.
