Delhi Lake Water Quality: Pollution Update
3 Dec
Summary
- Delhi pollution body reports improved lake water quality to NGT.
- STP operational, treating sewage before discharge into Satpula Lake.
- Water samples show some parameters exceed wildlife and fishery standards.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has provided an update to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding the water quality of Satpula Lake. Earlier reports indicated eutrophication and poor water quality, but recent samples suggest the water now largely meets standards for wildlife and fisheries. The DPCC stated that the adjoining Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is operational and effectively treating sewage prior to its release into the lake.
This development stems from an NGT directive issued in August, prompted by conflicting information on sewage discharge into the lake. The tribunal had asked the DPCC to verify the STP's functionality and analyze water samples to ascertain if untreated sewage was entering the water body. The case originated from a news report in April 2024 highlighting concerns about sewage flow into the lake.
While recent analyses show improvements, some parameters in the lake water, such as Dissolved Oxygen and Biological Oxygen Demand, still fall short of desired levels for aquatic life. The STP's treated water also showed elevated levels of fecal coliform. Despite these findings, the DPCC reported no bypasses allowing untreated sewage into the lake during its November 14 inspection.
