2 Apr
Summary
- Animals receive ice cubes, air coolers, and bamboo sheds.
- Special summer diet includes glucose, ORS, and hydrating fruits.
- Zoo also prepares for increased visitor footfall during holidays.

Sambalpur Zoo is actively combating the rising summer temperatures with a comprehensive animal welfare initiative. To ensure the comfort and health of its diverse inhabitants, the zoo has installed air coolers in enclosures housing leopards and bears, providing much-needed relief from daytime heat. Additional cooling measures include the placement of large ice cubes and the creation of water holes within all 28 animal enclosures.
Bamboo sheds and thatch roofs have been erected throughout the zoo, with water being sprinkled on them during the day to reduce heat. The animals' diets have been enhanced with hydrating foods such as watermelon, sugarcane, cucumber, and papaya, alongside glucose and ORS to maintain proper hydration. Bird enclosures are shielded with green nets and thatched bamboo to minimize heat exposure.
The zoo, home to 350 animals across 18 varieties, has recently welcomed blackbucks and hogdeers. Preparations are also underway to manage the anticipated increase in visitor numbers, expected to reach around 1,000 during summer holidays. Storytelling sessions are planned as an added attraction for visitors.
