A small British startup named SailLink is providing an environmentally friendly way to travel across the English Channel. Their service operates a catamaran, designed to carry up to 12 passengers, between Dover, Britain, and Boulogne-sur-Mer, France.

This innovative transport method relies mainly on wind and tidal flows, significantly reducing the need for fossil fuels. The journey typically takes between four and five hours, depending on weather conditions. In its first season, SailLink reported that nearly 70% of its crossings were powered entirely by wind.

The company's founder, Andrew Simons, aims to prove that wind-powered passenger transport can be both environmentally viable and commercially sustainable. He emphasizes the use of existing natural forces for energy.

SailLink began commercial operations in April 2025. During its inaugural season, the service transported 465 passengers and 135 bicycles. The company has since increased its scheduled crossings for the current year, experiencing a high volume of bookings shortly after reopening.

Unlike traditional ferry operations, SailLink utilizes town-center marinas for boarding, offering a more relaxed experience for passengers. Passport checks are conducted onboard, allowing for a smaller crew and vessel size. A one-way ticket for adults is priced at approximately 85 pounds ($110), with concessions available for younger travelers and an additional 10 pounds ($13.50) for carrying a standard bicycle.
