A white-handed gibbon named Siidam, who spent all 38 years of her life at the Sacramento Zoo, has passed away. Zoo officials confirmed her death on Wednesday, marking the end of an era for the beloved primate.
Siidam began showing signs of illness last week. She was subsequently taken to the zoo's veterinary hospital, where she was diagnosed with severe liver disease. Zookeepers provided intensive care, but sadly, Siidam's health continued to deteriorate.
On March 2, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize Siidam. White-handed gibbons, native to Southeast Asia, are listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Zoo staff are now closely observing Siidam's father, Ewell, following her passing.
