RSPB Urges Switch: Flat Feeders Spread Deadly Bird Disease
5 May
Summary
- Trichomonosis disease threatens greenfinch, chaffinch, and bullfinch populations.
- Flat feeders like bird tables are primary transmitters of the deadly parasite.
- RSPB recommends pausing seed and peanut feeding from May to October.

A significant threat to garden bird populations, trichomonosis, is causing declines in greenfinch, chaffinch, and bullfinch numbers. This disease, caused by a parasite affecting the throat and gullet, makes swallowing difficult for birds. Research by the RSPB indicates that flat feeders, including bird tables and window feeders, are the most significant transmission points. Sick birds often regurgitate contaminated food onto these surfaces, which is then consumed by healthy birds.
To mitigate the spread, the RSPB strongly recommends avoiding flat feeders and emphasizes thorough cleaning. They also advise moving feeders weekly to prevent dirt buildup and spreading feeders out to reduce congregation. A key recommendation is to pause feeding garden birds seeds and peanuts between May 1 and October 31 each year.
However, offering small amounts of mealworms, fatballs, or suet is still encouraged during this period, especially for nestlings. The RSPB notes that while trichomonosis is present year-round, it is less prevalent in winter due to cold weather. By adhering to seasonal feeding guidelines and employing safe feeding practices, the public can help protect the future of bird populations.
