Rome Zoo Fights Heatwave with Icy Treats for Animals
26 Jun
Summary
- Animals received frozen treats of fruit, veg, and fish.
- Cooling pools and climate-controlled indoor spaces were used.
- Amphibious species require air-conditioned shelters or water-cooling.

As Rome braces for temperatures reaching 36 to 37°C, the Bioparco Zoo has implemented extensive measures to protect its animal inhabitants from the heatwave.
Animals such as giraffes, hippos, tapirs, capybaras, lemurs, and seals were provided with frozen fruit, vegetables, and fish. Specially crafted ice treats were also distributed to help them cool down while encouraging natural behaviors.
In addition to the frozen treats, zoo staff have ensured that cooled pools and climate-controlled indoor environments are available. Amphibious species, in particular, may require air-conditioned shelters or water-cooling systems to endure the extreme heat.
Seals are being housed in pools maintained below 25°C to prevent overheating. The zoo notes that these cooling initiatives serve a dual purpose: they aid in animal welfare during the heatwave and provide valuable environmental enrichment, keeping the animals engaged and active.
