Romania Power Crunch: Wind Farm Gets Hybrid Boost
2 Oct
Summary
- Vifor wind farm will add battery storage and potentially solar power.
- Romania faces power shortages after its sole nuclear plant was idled.
- The Vifor wind farm will become the EU's third largest by mid-2027.

Rezolv Energy is planning to enhance its newly launched Vifor wind farm in Romania with battery storage and possibly solar generation capacity. This initiative comes as Romania is experiencing a severe power supply crunch following the idling of its sole nuclear reactor over the summer due to low river levels.
The Vifor wind farm, with its first phase of 192 MW now operational, is slated for expansion. CEO Alastair Hammond indicated plans for significant battery installation to hybridize the wind farm, with further consideration for integrating solar panels. This move towards a 'hybridisation' strategy aims to provide a more stable and reliable power source for the grid.
At full capacity by mid-2027, Vifor's 461 megawatts will position it as the European Union's third-largest wind farm. This development is crucial as Romania's energy infrastructure faces challenges from intermittent renewable output, low hydropower production due to drought, and the continued offline status of its nuclear reactors. The country has been actively increasing its renewable generation and storage capacity this year, but the need for flexible capacity remains high to ensure secure supply.
