In the picturesque town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, a new feathered resident has been causing quite a stir. About 9 months ago, a black swan named Reggie suddenly appeared and began to wreak havoc on the town's native mute swan population.
At first, Reggie seemed to get along fine with the other swans. However, as he grew more comfortable in his new surroundings, his true colors began to show. Reggie started to terrorize the male mute swans, breaking up long-established couples and attempting to mate with the females. In some cases, he even resorted to violence, trying to drown the other swans.
The town's volunteer swan warden, Cyril Bennis, has been dealing with the Reggie situation, which he describes as an "absolute ruddy nightmare." Bennis, who has nicknamed Reggie "Mr. Terminator," says the black swan's behavior was unacceptable and posed a threat to the local ecology.
After consulting with the Crown's representative, Bennis decided it was time to remove Reggie from the pond and send him on his way. But the black swan was not going to go down without a fight. Bennis says Reggie "fought like tooth and nail" when he tried to capture him, leaving the warden a bit sore.
Ultimately, Bennis was able to calm the bird down and get him into a bag. Reggie is now recovering in a local enclosure, being fed treats and awaiting his transfer to the Dawlish Waterfowl Centre in Devon, which is home to one of the largest black swan populations in the country.
While Reggie's relocation may have solved the immediate problem, Bennis is still facing the wrath of the local community. Many residents, especially the children, are distraught over the loss of their beloved black swan. Bennis says he can't go anywhere in town without someone stopping him and demanding to know why he "banished" Reggie.
