Robot Mowers Threaten Wildlife: Call for Night Ban
6 Apr
Summary
- German mayors advocate a nationwide ban on night-time robot mower use.
- Studies highlight risks from mower blades to nocturnal animals.
- Hedgehog numbers decline, listed as 'near threatened' since 2024.

German cities are advocating for a national prohibition on the night-time use of robot lawnmowers, citing critical risks to nocturnal animals. Recent studies have underscored the danger posed by the blades of these automated devices to wildlife active at dusk and dawn. Hedgehogs, known to curl into a ball when threatened, are especially vulnerable and difficult for mower sensors to detect.
Claudia Kalisch, vice-president of the German federation of cities, stated that urban green spaces are crucial substitute habitats for many mammals. She called the night-time ban a logical protective measure and urged manufacturers to implement solutions to prevent further harm to small animals. This initiative aims to enhance animal protection and urban biodiversity.
The hedgehog population has seen a significant decline, leading to its 'near threatened' status since 2024. Beyond lawnmowers, motorized leaf blowers and vacuums also pose risks, and vehicle collisions contribute to their drastic reduction across Europe. Researchers are exploring sonic repellers and developing 'hedgehog-friendly' mower certifications.
