17 Aug
Summary
- Rhossi, an endangered sea turtle, traveled 5,000 miles from Wales.
- He was found stranded and suffering from pneumonia.
- The turtle is recovering and will be returned to the Gulf.

An endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle named Rhossi has found a temporary home at the Houston Zoo. Rhossi's incredible journey began when he was discovered stranded on a Welsh beach in December 2023. Weighing only two pounds, he had been swept thousands of miles across the Atlantic and was suffering from the effects of dangerously cold North Atlantic waters.
After receiving initial care and two years of rehabilitation at the Anglesey Sea Zoo in Wales, where he significantly grew stronger, Rhossi made the transatlantic voyage back to Southeast Texas. Upon arrival on August 10th, zoo staff assessed his condition. Rhossi is currently being treated for pneumonia and closely monitored as he regains strength. His ultimate destination is a return to his natural habitat in the Gulf.
