8 Nov
Summary
- More than six rhinos were spotted in Katarniaghat's floodplains.
- Rhino sightings coincide with reduced elephant crop damage.
- Forest department plans to expand habitat for wildlife.
A significant development for biodiversity has occurred in Bahraich, with a herd of more than six rhinoceroses sighted near Bharthapur village in the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division. These majestic animals have been observed roaming in the floodplains and grasslands along the Kaudiyala River, a sight that has delighted both villagers and wildlife enthusiasts.
The presence of these rhinos is particularly welcomed by farmers. Villagers noted that the increased rhinoceros activity has coincided with a reduction in the movement of elephant herds, which had frequently caused crop damage in agricultural fields. This ecological shift has brought considerable relief to the farming community.
Wildlife experts consider both rhinos and elephants to be key attractions in Katarniaghat, underscoring the region's ecological importance. The forest department is considering a plan to develop natural forest cover on land that will be vacated by the relocation of Bharthapur village. This initiative is expected to expand the forest area, creating more suitable habitats for species like rhinoceroses, tigers, and elephants.
Katarniaghat Forest Range Officer Ashish Gaur mentioned that rhinos also traverse between Nepal's Royal Bardia National Park and Katarniaghat via the Khata Corridor. Their increased presence in the Katarniaghat region is also viewed positively for tourism, potentially drawing more nature lovers. The forest department has enhanced patrolling and advised villagers to maintain a safe distance from the wildlife.
