Residents Revolt Against Garbage Plant in Mohali Neighborhood
18 Aug
Summary
- Residents block construction of waste processing plant in Mohali
- Cite health hazards and environmental concerns over the facility
- Mohali's cleanliness ranking drops sharply in recent survey

As of August 18th, 2025, the residents of Mohali's Sectors 74 and 91 have fiercely opposed the construction of a new waste processing plant in their neighborhood. The machines had arrived on site just a few days ago to begin work on the 13-acre facility, but the local residents quickly mobilized to block the project.
Shouting slogans and declaring they would not allow a "mountain of garbage" to rise in their area, the protesters cited concerns over the foul odor, mosquito breeding, and potential health hazards that the plant would bring. Some residents claimed they had already met with the local MLA, Kulwant Singh, but were told that the plant would still be built at the same location, further inflaming public anger.
The growing waste crisis in Mohali has also taken a toll on the city's cleanliness rankings. In the latest Swachh Survekshan results announced in July 2025, Mohali slipped to 128th place among 903 cities with populations between 50,000 and 3 lakh, down from 82nd the previous year. Within Punjab, the city fell to 11th among 35 cities, a sharp drop from the first-place rank it held just a year ago.
The mounting waste problem in Mohali, with 150 tons of garbage generated daily, has led to heaps of stinking waste scattered across neighborhoods, drawing flies and stray animals. Despite the establishment of two waste management facilities in Shahimajra and Jagatpura, both plants remain non-functional, exacerbating the crisis.
