Residents Fight Back Against Illegal Dumping
20 Jun
Summary
- Illegal dumping occurs on New Perungalathur panchayat land.
- Residents are taking waste management into their own hands.
- About 500 households now segregate recyclable waste.

Residents in Alapakkam are increasingly taking charge of their waste management due to ongoing illegal dumping. The Nedungundram panchayat is reportedly dumping garbage on land belonging to the New Perungalathur panchayat, a situation that deeply troubles conscientious residents. This practice often results in segregated waste being mixed and redumped, prompting proactive measures.
Jayaraman Srinivasan of SSM Nagar highlighted the issue, noting that while his community manages its waste separately, surrounding areas are affected by the Nedungundram panchayat's dumping. A panchayat official cited a lack of alternative sites as the reason for using the current location, leading to secondary dumping by individuals. To combat this, SSM Nagar residents have successfully campaigned for approximately 500 households to segregate their recyclable waste. Other communities, such as S&P Villa and Shrusti Villa Phase I, are also implementing dry waste segregation, offering a model for broader community involvement in waste management.
